The Copt language (from the Arabian Kobt)
represents the last stadium of the ancient Egyptian
language, enlarged with some Greek and Latin words. It
was written not in Hieroglyphic signs but in Greek
letters. The Copta alphabet includes,
beyond the twenty-four Greek letters, seven signs
proceeding from the memothic (ancient Egyptian writing
used by the people). They were destined to traduce proper
sounds of the Egyptian language.
The Copta writing started to be commonly used from the 3
Rd century. Since the Egypt's conquest by the Arabians in
the 7 Th century, the Arabian overpasses the Copta
language is popular access. This language was used in
churches and convents liturgy language. |
